First Victims of Paragallo Farm Neglect Ready for Adoption
Malnourished, neglected, lice infected, wormy – just a few of the descriptive words and phrases used to initially describe the first victims of a breeding farm that sold these horses surreptitiously to a kill pen where they awaited transport of a Canadian slaughterhouse, have made an amazing recovery and are now available for adoption.
Coconut Martini left yesterday to go to her new home in Vermont with Karen Burrington arriving late last night. Ironically Karen’s daughter, Kate exercised horses for Paranack Stables in 2004 and had exercised and cared for Coconut Martini while helping her to rehabilitate after a broken pelvis by doing ring work with the horse at Saratoga.. Kate, who now lives in Greenwich, NY had lost track of Teeny ( Coconut Martini ) until someone alerted her to the story in the NY Post. Today Kate traveled to her mom’s home to revisit Teeny .”She still has a great attitude and she doesn’t seem to be damaged mentally by what she has been through,” Kate stated after having visited with Teeny and her mom this afternoon.. “It’s hard to believe, after all that she has been through, how nice she still is.” From race horse to starving kill pen horse and now to a quiet life of being pampered and spoiled, Coconut Martini, aka Teeny, has found her new home.
The remaining 3 thoroughbreds, Jennifer, Finely Decorated and Theonlyword are available for adoption. This week everyone is set for their dental and farrier work; all have had their vaccinations. “ I am really glad we had such a positive outcome for these horses,” Christy Sheidy grinned.” Had it not been for some good timing and just plain good luck, I wouldn’t have had the resources or the room to help these horses. We were filled to capacity, but when I got the call about these horses, the owner of a nearby farm had seen the HBO segment Hidden Horses and offered to rent the property to us.” Watch for the follow up to this segment in May 09.
Another Chance 4 Horses has been renovating the barn; built 7 stalls, erected fencing and still need some run in sheds to be able to use the property most efficiently. Another Chance 4 Horses is a 501c3 non-profit horse rescue and depends on the generosity of its supporters and donors to continue its charitable work.
“They’re all ready to go home now,” beamed Christy who rescued these original four thoroughbred mares, identified them and thus opened the investigation ultimately leading to many more horses found in various degrees of starvation and neglect at Center Brook Farm in NY owned by Ernie Paragallo who is best known for racing Artax and Unbridled’s Song, Breeder Cup winners. The New York State Police charged Paragallo with 22 counts of animal cruelty, and Paragallo has repeatedly apologized for the condition of the horses. Paragallo sent a check of $4000. to help with the rehabilitation of the mares. With many thanks to the New York Times and the Paulik report for their determination to get the news out, more than 180 horses have a much better future in store for them.
